ESBEN AND THE WITCH have been gaining momentum over the past months, releasing a super limited edition single through the Too Pure singles club, and playing a very well received set at this years Field Day festival. Their music is ethereal, only more in the eerie than Enya sense of the word, an eeriness inspired as much by books as any record - they're as into Bacon and Bosch as they are Björk or (Kate) Bush. They hover enigmatically between goth, electronica, trip-hop and post-rock. In Fisher and Copeman's by turns soft and stormy instrumental interference of Killing Joke's tribal thunder, there are echoes of Aphex's glitchy gall, of Portishead's serene menace and of the abstract invention of Radiohead circa Kid A. Instantly captivating, they channel something romantic and gothic, a shadow of something intangible and otherworldly.
Plus TROPHY WIFE and BRETON
With sparse melodies, melancholic beats and lush echoing vocals, Oxford trio, TROPHY WIFE describe their music as ambitiousless office disco / commuter pop. Don't be fooled though, their unabrasive sound has quickly found them many admirers and recent Moshi Moshi single, ‘Microlite' is a track so perfectly formed you can hardly believe it's their debut. With sparse rhythms, a gentle electronic pulse and fragile vocals their sound has seen them compared to Vampire Weekend and The XX and the band have recently toured with Foals, Bombay Bicycle Club and Crystal Castles.
BRETON fuse brooding hip-hop, rock and electronica into an unmistakable signature sound. Expect anthemic vocals, driving synth hooks, heavy guitars and tough beats. With insace hype from blogs and radio, features in Dazed and The Fly, remixes for Local Natives and Tricky, - BRETON will be charging up the ranks of 'Bands to Watch in 2011' lists.
