THE LOVES RETIREMENT PARTY

Comet Gain, The School, The Lovely Eggs, The Vinyl Stitches and more TBC

Presented by: Fortuna POP!
0LONDON: The Lexington
PSunday 13th February, 2011
N3:00pm

Event information

After 11 years, The Loves are retiring. Their 4th & final LP 'Love You' (which was Artrocker's LP Of The Month in their December/January issue) serves as the closing chapter in a story that has included 4 John Peel radio sessions, countless band members coming & going, some mental illness, a lot of alcohol & shows up & down the country with bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Apples In Stereo, The Rapture, Darren Hayman & The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

They're holding a retirement party at The Lexington on Sunday the 13th of February 2011 featuring a cavalcade of bands that they've played with over the years.

The 1st 50 people through the door (who aren't in bands or on the guest-list) will receive an exclusive EP of cover versions from The Loves.

'Similar to band's such as The Turtles or early Mothers Of Invention from that late 60's time period or even a band from today such as The Brian Jonestown Massacre or The Explorers Club they manage to sound like a group that has been transported to today from the 1960's rather than one who has simply bought Beatle wigs and gulped down fistful of LSD in search of inspiration (Yes I'm talking to you MGMT).' The fourohfive.

'They're splitting up in February 2011, maybe because when you become as good as the gods you worship, you're kind of stuck for a way forward.'- Unpeeled.net

With support from:
Comet Gain
Formed in London, England, in 1993, and influenced as much by the riot-grrrl movement as by the music of the girl-group era, Comet Gain mix punk-pop aesthetics with a more abstract northern soul sensibility. Magical, passionate and emotional, inspired in equal parts by The Go-Betweens, Godard, Irma Thomas, dance parties, Dexy's Midnight Runners, falling in love, mod and hootenannies, Comet Gain are one of the finest British bands of our time. Their new album, recorded with Edwyn Collins and Ryan Jarman of The Cribs, will be released on Fortuna POP! in 2011

The School
Headed by ex-Loves keyboardist Liz Hunt, The School have been spreading their brand of indiepop all over the world since 2007. Signed to Spanish label Elefant their debut LP 'Loveless Unbeliever' came out in 2010 to great acclaim & their follow up should be out later 2011.

The Lovely Eggs
Occasionally satirical and often surreal The Lovely Eggs won't deliver a straight forward love song to your door, instead you'll be taken on a journey into Holly and David's world where there are no seatbelts! The band have a single and album 'Cob Dominos' which release follows on Feb 14th.
'You won't hear another band like this anywhere between now and the end of the millennium. The Lovely Eggs are just brilliant!' - Huw Stephens, Radio One

Pocketbooks
Pocketbooks are a pop band from London, combining melodic harmonies, spiralling guitars and delicate pianos. They released their debut album 'Flight Paths' in 2009, and are currently recording their second album.
"Some of the finest songwriters in indiepop today" SCATTERBRAIN

The Vinyl Stitches
The show will be kicked off in grand style by The Vinyl Stitches, a 3 pronged garage rock attack complete with fuzz & howling in abundance. Their debut LP is out in January 2011.
"Occasionally London throws up a primitive rock band that you simply
cant ignore THE VINYL STITCHES are such a band"! SHINDIG! magazine.

Micktravis
Micktravis is Jamie Holman from Tompaulin, Sister Vanilla and The Fischers. It's startlingly obvious that his best days are behind him, but he still pops occasionally with acoustic guitar/songs about girls/I coulda been a contender/this is my best work blah blah blah.
He has actually done a lot more than you think. (So what? Haven't they all. He claims to have discovered The Loves, then fumed as they recorded more Peel sessions than Tompaulin.

The Werewandas
Comprised of members of The Fat Tulips, The Cut-Outs, The Shla-la-las, Mambo Taxi and Airport Girl, The Werewandas are a five-piece combo of Fujiyama mamas and papas who gleefully massacre rock'n'roll standards as well as their own original Western Bop confections, wishing they were Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps and ending up as a lo-fi, garage-pop Everly Sisters.
