Hey! Manchester is excited to be promoting an intimate show for two great French groups – Team Ghost and Anoraak – plus one of our favourite local bands, Daniel Land & The Modern Painters!
Nicolas Fromageau was a founding member of M83 and co-wrote the duo’s first two albums, M83 and Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts. Before their third album, Nicolas left M83 and their hometown Antibes for Paris, forming Team Ghost with Christophe Guérin and Jean-Philippe Talaga. Last year saw them produce remixes for UNKLE and Yeti Lane, and release their first two EPs on Sonic Cathedral (School of Seven Bells, Kyte, Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips).
‘Fromageau and associates have taken the blueprint of his former outfit, mixed it up with the odd tinge of krautrock, disco and post-punk and majestically conjured up a dazzling array of sounds’ – 8/10 Drowned in Sound
‘Fromageau is simply a master of blissed-out walls of ambience and guitar that give Team Ghost colossal heft’ – The Line of Best Fit
Daniel Land & The Modern Painters, meanwhile, are a modern Manchester shoegazing group who have also released music on Sonic Cathedral. There debut album, Love Songs For The Chemical Generation, features contributions from Mark Peters (Engineers) and Ulrich Schnauss, with whom they often play together.
‘A magnificent, magical and monolithic slice of shoegaze beauty. Sounds like Slowdive reimagined by Phil Spector‘ – NME
‘The sort of stripped down, laid back sound employed by bands like Mojave 3 with the gauzey textures of the Cocteau Twins‘ – BBC 6 Music
Anoraak are a ‘pop-electro-new wave’ group signed to Naïve (home to The xx, Andrew Bird, Anthony & The Johnsons in France), who released their debut album in September 2010. Titled Wherever The Sun Sets, the record features contributions from Sally Shapiro and Siobhan Wilson.
‘The album, much like Anoraak’s previous original works and remixes, is simply beautiful and smoothed out’ – 7.5/10 Speakerboxxx
This show is organised in conjunction with Oui Love and Access to Music.
