Bryan Talbot discusses his graphic novels Grandville and Grandville Mon Amour and the venerable and on-going tradition of anthropomorphic characters in illustration and comics from which they have emerged, pointing out references to this tradition and 19th century art within the Grandville books themselves.
The presentation concludes with a breakdown of the different stages of the creation of a Grandville page, from pencilled art to finished digital colouring.
Biog;
Bryan Talbot has produced underground and alternative comics, notably Brainstorm!, science fiction and superhero stories such as Judge Dredd, Nemesis the Warlock, Teknophage, The Nazz and Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight. He’s worked on DC Vertigo titles including Hellblazer, Sandman, The Dreaming and Fables and has written and drawn the graphic novels for which he is best known including The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, Heart of Empire, The Tale of One Bad Rat and Alice in Sunderland. In 2009 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Arts by Sunderland University. His last two books were Grandville and Grandville Mon Amour, anthropomorphic steampunk detective thrillers. His next graphic novel is Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes written by his wife Dr Mary M Talbot.
