Tempo Tempo presents:
Ex-Vibracathedral Orchestra guitarist, Bridget Hayden, is coming back to Newcastle on the back of her new album’s release and some great reviews. Using just a guitar, two pedals and a 4-track, Hayden succeeds in creating a surprisingly dense sound, yet with the softness and patience to lull one into an enchanting trance. This music could, if it had to, be described as “drone”, “noise”, “lo-fi” or whatever other meaningless definitions, and lazy journalists could, and probably will, describe her as the Cat Power of drone, which would make sense on some level, but which we simply won’t do here. She herself has described her music as “fucked-up Blues”, which makes more sense. At an age where The Blues have been watered down by lame attempts at recreating some romanticized, macho image of a truck-driving hick singing about hard-times (Sea Sick Steve, anyone?) Bridget has managed to bypass an obsession with the superficial and tap into what feels like the inner essence of the Blues, it’s essential sadness, which is more Blues than any foot-stomping riff Jack White has ever punished us with. She’s also on the wonderful Kraak label (Ignatz; Silvester Anfang, and more) if that helps anyone.
There’s something about this kind of music that’s is always lost in verbal communication and in listening to audio snippets online, but if you come along and allow yourself to be consumed by the music you will not be disappointed. Having said that, listen to some samples here to get an idea of what to expect:

Supporting Bridget on her Newcastle date will be friends and fans, Jazzfinger and Obey. I know there’s not much I need to say about Jazzfinger. They are the kings in Newcastle, still indisputable:
