The birth of Daystar took place in Wythenshawe, south Manchester, where Phil Cuthbert and, eventual band front man, Simon Monaghan forged a crude recording studio in a dingy garage, using whatever equipment they could pull together at the time, and began to feverishly demo their creations. The pair quickly became aware that something pretty special was occurring and the resulting collection of catchy, hook-laden songs inspired the friends to take things forward as quickly as possible. Although family commitments meant Phil had to concentrate on song production, Simon set about the task of putting together the band that would bring their ideas to life. In what seemed like no time at all Steven Woods on bass and, cousin, Ryan Arnfield on lead guitar, along with Tom Mallas on drums and Sam Bugajski on rhythm guitar had each put their unique stamp on the band’s sound and Daystar were ready to take to the road and captivate audiences nationwide.
Since their first live performance at Moho in Manchester in March 2010, what Daystar has achieved is remarkable. The band have become popular regulars on ESPN football show ‘Talk of the Terrace‘, playing their debut single ‘Slip and Dive’ to great acclaim in February 2011, and were invited back later the same year to perform follow-up release ‘Off Our Heads’, having been introduced by presenter Nat Coombs as their “favourite band from last season”. The band even agreed to record the theme tune for Nat’s award-winning ‘Americarnage’ pod cast.
‘Off Our Heads’ has been cranked out of PA systems at football stadiums across the UK, including at no less than nine Premier League clubs, and has received airplay on BBC Radio 2, Radio 6, Q Radio and a host of regional BBC stations and independent radio stations as far away as the USA. The band have also been featured in both the Manchester City official magazine and the Manchester United match day programme.
An intoxicating blend of raw enthusiasm and boundless talent has served as the platform from which the band has evolved from the meagre background of the rehearsal room into the creative whirlwind they are today… All that remains is for Daystar to realize their destiny.
Join the revolution…
