On March 2nd 2012 at the Jericho Tavern, Smilex will be celebrating ten years since they first assembled on a grubby Oxford toilet venue stage for their first ever performance. Now something of a rock institution - Smilex have never failed to entertain, shock, amaze and horrify with controversial, charistmatic, Freddy Mercury-esque showmanship and simply unmissable live shows to make your ears bleed. In a good way. More than a few local luminaries have saluted Lee as the best frontman in Oxford – to which his reply was ...‘only Oxford?'
To those in the know, Smilex is an exciting, daring rock 'n’ roll band who learnt their chops the hard way: through relentless, energetic, sheer punk rock live shows which have seen them tearing up stages with the likes of Stone Gods, Selfish C*nt and hand-picked to support The Damned. A union and musical chemistry built on little more than a common love of rocking harder than anyone else which blossomed into friendships, relationships and camaraderie.
It’s hard to believe it has been a decade of gigs and independent releases, for no-one as much as the band itself. Smilex’s new record ‘La Petite Mort’ (out in 2012) does anything but avoid the issues no-one wants to address in entertainment for fear or failing on a record that steps up both the fury associated with their live presence and the intricacies of their playing whilst breaking new ground in songcraft and melodicism.
Joined by rockin' emerging local acts The Cellar Family and Deer Chicago, Coo (and we've been around for a while..) is proud to present the Smilex 10th anniversary, for what promises to be one hell of a night. THE rock band to sum up the last decade of music in Oxford, Smilex continue to lead the way. Expect some surprises and a rock'n'roll party to remember!
