Event information

The Cookie Jar welcomes Tom Deacon and Grainne McGuire to Leicester as they present previews of their new shows!

Tom Deacon - Tom is one of the hottest young stand-ups on the circuit today, having already performed on The Rob Brydon Show and Dave’s One Night Stand.

After winning The Chortle Student Comedian Award in 2007, Tom took part in Edinburgh Festival’s longest running group comedy show, The Comedy Zone in 2008, which previously launched the careers of Russell Howard, Harry Hill and Al Murray.

The following year he returned to the festival with his first solo show, Indecisive, performing to sold-out crowds and gaining critical acclaim. Tom returned to the festival in 2011 with new show Can I Be Honest? and in 2012 is debuting Tom Deacon: Deaconator.

From 2007 Tom presented The 5:19 Show, a youth orientated programme for BBC Switch, featuring comedy sketches, music and celebrity interviews. The show aired daily online and on Saturday mornings on BBC Two.

As of March 2010 Tom has been the host of his own show on BBC Radio 1. The show broadcasts every Sunday from 7-9pm.

Grainne Maguire - As a stand up comedian Gráinne Maguire is a breath of fresh air. Original and inventive with a subversive twist.

Her deep reserves of excitable energy, along with material about the Bronte sisters, reclaiming big bellies for the sisterhood and fancying Ed Milliband make her a unique new voice in comedy.

As a writer she is witty, incisive and thoughtful. Gráinne wrote a weekly satirical celeb column in national newspaper, The Irish World, and has also had articles published in The Evening Standard. Grainne has recently written for The Now Show, The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4) and 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4).

She is an excellent topical joke writer, combining a political nerd’s knowledge of current affairs with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Cheryl Coles’ love life.

This summer, Grainne takes her debut solo show, Where Are All the Fun Places and Are Lots of People There Having Better Fun? to the Edinburgh Festival.

Gráinne currently has several Radio comedy scripts and a satirical TV format in development.
