Event information

ALLO DARLIN are back! Popklubb is pleased to announce we-re putting on Allo Darlin' again at the Star and Shadow Cinema on September the 5th. I'm sure anyone who attended their sell out February gig this year will vouch for how amazing they were, and well, it's the first time they will have played after the release of their album in May, which means you can now all sing along... strong support comes from Popklubb faves Pale Man Made, and the brooding, rich melodies of locally based The Agency. Advance tickets are £8 pound, available here. Given the last gig was sold out, pre-purchase is recommended to avoid disappointment:

Allo Darlin'

Allo Darlin's self-titled indiepop debut of 2010, and the recently released follow up, 'Europe,' not only courted universal critical accolades, but demonstrated why they are the band 'most likely to,' in terms of crossover appeal, following in the footsteps of the likes of Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura. The reasons are multifold- a succession of killer pop singles in the likes of 'Dreaming' (now an established Popklubb dancefloor filler), 'Polaroid,' and 'Capricornia,' are contrasted with stripped down romantic paeans; things of great beauty which can disarm you with just Elizabeth Morris's voice, and a sole ukulele or steel guitar.

Recent years have seen them championed by, and recording Maida Vale sessions for, BBC Radio 6, tour the USA four times, and make audiences swoon at the SXSW and Indietracks festivals.

"A smile is never far from Morris's mouth and nor is a killer melody. 'Polaroid' and particularly 'Dreaming' turn my mood from early festival optimism to something near universal love for humanity." Drowned in Sound

"From the very first track it's clear they've got that ephemeral something that separates the pretty good from the truly magical." The Fly

"the best new group in recent years from a pop tradition that attempts to counter what its members might perceive as the market-corroded fantasy of corporate pop and the detached insularity of many underground records. Led by Australian-born Elizabeth Morris, who previously played with ex-Talulah Gosh frontwoman Amelia Fletcher in Tender Trap, the London foursome established themselves as worthy heirs to Belle and Sebastian, Camera Obscura, and the Sarah Records roster with their 2010 self-titled debut, all hummable melodies, clap-along rhythms, and poignantly turned phrases. Europe maintains these qualities and improves upon its predecessor in almost every way......In Europe's world, pop songs are almost characters in their own right" (Pitchfork)

Pale Man Made

Playing on the back of the recent release of their new album 'Red Box Secrets' this year, Newcaslte based PMM should need no introduction, but if you-re coming in from the cold,(from Oddbox Records) they take 'touhes of the best 80s and 90s music, add a caustic commentary on working life, relationship problems, animals, politics and snooker players and engulf the whole thing in a melodic whirlwind of boy-girl fuzz. Think the best Scottish pop (The Pastels, The Shop Assistants, Orange Juice) blended with the angst and ferocity of The Wedding Present, all clouded by a gentler take on the heady fuzz of My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
Single 'In Your Bed' is the second UK taster from the forthcoming album Red Box Secrets which will be released on Odd Box Records on XXX May. The first taster 'B-Line', received excellent airplay including numerous plays from 6 music and BBC London.

'Oh, My Treasured Things' Pale Man Made's debut album was described by NME as 'a thing to treasure', was voted Album of the Week by Huw Stephens and received excellent reviews and international airplay.

"the male/female vocals are shared like a bag of salty chips and wolfed down with gusto" The Crack

The Agency

With literary and media influences as diverse as the musical soundscape there is something for all that dare to listen to 'The Agency...'.offering poetic glimmers of hope in a dark, powerful electric landscape

"This is rather fabulous. The Agency are a Newcastle based band, trading, nominally in folk/rock, but such a label is a tad reductive in this case. They have the kind of listen-to-me intensity that Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds manage to conjure up (particularly on Cave's fabulous 'The Boatman's Call' album) and the instrumentation is exemplary throughout. Incredibly rich, and with plenty of sweet melodies to boot, this is like setting down with your favourite bar of quality dark chocolate" (The Crack)
