The 1st night of our festival of five Fridays, running from 14th September - 12th October, featuring some of our favourite bands and DJs, old and new, in the Val Parnell Room at the legendary London Palladium.

▲ Wolf People

Over the last few decades, there have consistently been doomsayers proclaiming that the guitar is on its way out as a centrally important instrument of popular music. Wrong as they've invariably been, what has become more prevalent is a shift in some quarters away from having the guitar define one's sound. While computer wizardry and studio trickery might be the salvation of some, the southern English four-piece Wolf People are the resolute opposite. Insatiable consumers of hen's-teeth hard rock and psychedelic obscurities, Steeple - their debut album, reflects this dusty immersion via nine songs which deliberately, and unashamedly, look to the past.

The Line Of Best Fit call their sound 'a relaxed and fluent assemblage, entwined in a gorgeous psychedelic, blues rock holy matrimony'.

▲ Monster Island

One of the really hard things to resist when reviewing bands is to draw comparisons between them and other, more established, bands. On one hand, it gives the reader an instant point of reference, but on the other, it does neither party any favours. No band sounds exactly like another, but when a band comes along that sounds like a combination of three great bands - let's say, The Fall, Pavement and The Pixies - wouldn't it just be more stupid not to mention the fact? - anewbandaday.com.

▲ Crushing Blows

The name sounds like disappointment, but disappointed you shall not be watching this indie noise-pop group. Combining musical craftsmanship, pop hooks and a passionate stage performance, their live show has fast become a talking point on the DIY music scene.

Musically they fall somewhere in between Battles and Broken Social Scene, yet their sound is far from derivative. Guitarist and falsetto vocalist Chris Jones creates interesting and intricate sounds, while drummer Andrew Foster plays with precision and speed, often juggling singing and keyboard parts too! - BBC Introducing.

Thanks to Emily from Stealing Sheep, for designing the great poster for this show.
