HANNES RIEPLER QUARTET:

Much has been written about London’s hot bed of young, fresh exciting talent, but when one musician becomes the go-to guy by those at the top of their game, one has to take notice. Since moving to London from Austria in 2006, guitarist Hannes Riepler has made his mark on the city’s vibrant jazz scene, not only for his outstanding, inventive guitar skill and freewheeling energy, but as an extraordinarily talented composer. “Playing and listening to Hannes’ music is great – it is interesting and challenging, but also melody-driven and accessible” says pianist Kit Downes, winner of the 2008 BBC Jazz Award for Rising Star, and a 2010 Mercury nomination for his debut album Golden. “It is written in way that is both very open and well-referenced – which means it never feels hard to play, and it all shines with Hannes’ warm and interesting personality.” The highly acclaimed and award-wining bassist Jasper Hoiby (Phronesis) says: ‘This is Dynamic soaring playing and beautiful compositions. A breath of fresh air straight from the heart of the big smoke.’

The Quartet, including tenor sax man Tom Challenger (Outhouse, Ma, Red Snapper), bassist Ryan Trebilcock, and drummer Jon Scott (Kairos 4tet) will be playing music from Riepler’s stunning debut album The Brave (jellymould) and newly written material. A stylish venture that at times thrills with the immediacy of New York’s propulsive downtown style, and at others swings like hell. With roots firmly established in the jazz tradition, yet with a sound influenced by rock, classical and folk music, his is a music that is contemporary and melodic.

ANDRE CANNIERE GROUP:

American trumpeter and composer Andre Canniere is fast establishing himself as a leading figure on the UK jazz scene. Prior to his move to London in 2008, Andre lived in New York City where he worked with artists such as Maria Schneider, Bjorkestra, Ted Poor, Ingrid Jensen, Donny McCaslin and Darcy James Argue. He has toured widely throughout the United States and Europe, including performances at Carnegie Hall, Birdland, the Hague Jazz Festival and the Rochester International Jazz Festival.

Since his arrival in the UK, Andre’s profile has been steadily rising, both as a solo artist and a collaborator. His album ‘Forward Space’, released in 2012 on the Whirlwind Recordings label, received widespread critical acclaim including a five-star review from the Guardian and a Mercury Prize recommendation.

Canniere is a composer whose music often crosses the traditional boundaries of classification, infusing and drawing inspiration from multiple genres. His unique compositional style is typified by a keen knowledge of all the contemporary jazz trends and shows his powerful but melodic approach to improvising.
