Orphy Robinson, Pat Thomas, Mark and Raph are 'Ting!'. The group came together after a number of gigs last year in which the idea of reworking, deconstructing and reconstructing jazz standards emerged and in so doing, the group celebrates the gap between groove and freedom.
Orphy is one of the key figures in the development of Brit Jazz in the 90s, a vibes player extraordinaire Orphy has been at the forefront of the improvising scene in the UK over the last 20 years and came to prominence in the mid 80s when he joined the Jazz Warriors, the seminal big band. From there he has gone on to work with the likes of Andy Sheppard, Lester Bowie and David Murray as well as being one of the few British artists to be signed to the American Blue Note label for whom he recorded two albums. Recently he has been touring with Nigel Kennedy and promoting his excellent Spontaneous Cosmic Rawxstra, a big band that draws on funk, reggae, free improvisation and the music of Sun Ra.
On piano, Pat Thomas is regarded as one of the most influential pianists in European jazz and improvisation. His cv is compelling – stints with the legendary Tony Oxley and recent work with Eugene Chadbourne and ex Mothers of Invention percussionist, Jimmy Carl Black, confirm Pat’s status as a master improviser. The engine room of 'Ting!' consists of Raph Mizraki and Mark Doffman, described by a visiting artist once in terms of being 'as one'.
Should be a great gig. Do not miss.
