Is it possible to choose who we love? This is the question posed by Mozarts’s comic opera that sees aristocratic Constanza and her servant Blonda kidnapped but resisting the sexual and romantic advances of the Pasha Selim and the harem guard Osim. The opera develops with a delirious plot, all spiced up with some of the most amazing arias Mozart ever wrote.
Opera at Home’s rendition of The Abduction from the Seraglio is set in a distorted present time. Personal freedom, the control over women sexualities and the tyranny of love appear as recurrent themes through the opera, with a delightful surprise ending that turns around our preconceptions.
There will be a chance for local people to take part, and two training workshops will be organised. These will take place on Saturday afternoons September 28th and October 5th.
