NIBS VAN DER SPUY
In May 2013, acclaimed South African troubadour, Nibs, released his first comprehensive anthology album (1998 - 2010), 'Crossing Borders, Driving North'. This re-mastered two CD package includes his creative highlights, spanning a 15 year career. Disc 1 features riveting performances taken from his illustrious nine solo albums, featuring such gems as, 'Counting Stars', 'Beautiful Feet', Anna Rosa', Felix', 'May you shine' and 'Cry for you'. Disc 2 is a bonus CD entitled, 'Catching Trains' - Nibs solo live through Europe. This traces his footsteps through numerous tours through France, Germany and the UK. Never released before, these selections of 'live' performance were handpicked by Nibs himself. They feature Nibs up close, from intimate theatres, music halls, open air festivals and within the walls of a maximum security prison.
Nibs' virtuosic acoustic guitar style and a mesmeric whispering voice have attracted a widespread following for its intelligent folk, world and African overtones. He first came onto the scene in the early '90's with his Afro-Acoustic band 'Landscape Prayers'. They toured and recorded 4 albums from 1993 - 2003. His diversity as a songwriter and guitarist, reached a broader audience with the release of his solo albums; 'Lines on my face' (1999) and 'Flower in the rain' (2002). His third offering 'Beautiful feet' was released internationally in 2007 and received rave reviews in the UK, Europe and Australia.
Nibs' following releases, 'A BIRD IN THE HAND' (2008) and 'A HOUSE ACROSS THE RIVER' (2010) also received accolades across the globe. Germany's Jazzthetic publication cited them as a future classics of the folk genre while The Guardian praised Nibs for producing the most sensitive and breathy songs and instrumentals on the continent.
Nibs toured Europe for the best part of 2011 and appeared in France's leading guitar publication, 'Unplugged' as well as a full page article in Liberation. In October 2011, he also released his all acoustic album, 'Morning Star', which features only voice and various guitars recorded in a day. 2012 saw Nibs collaborate with old friend, former student and finger style virtuoso Guy Buttery. They recorded the beautiful, 'In the shade of the wild fig', with extensive touring in South Africa and Europe. They are soon set to release a live DVD featuring a performance with the KZNPO (Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra).
DAN PATLANSKY
In only a little over a decade on the music scene, Dan Patlansky has become one of the busiest and most respected blues artists to ever come out of South Africa.
After his debut, Standing at the Station, an independent album that amazed critics and garnered Dan a reputation as a Blues-phenomenon and his subsequent "Readers Choice" vote as "Best Blues Guitarist in Southern Africa" - Dan released a second album, True Blues which was produced and released by EMI on the famed Blue Note label in 2004. Dan is one of the only South Africans to ever achieve "Blue Note" status.
In 2006 Fender Guitars recognised Dan's fiery playing and offered him an endorsement deal to promote Fender Guitars and amps. Dan is one of only six Fender endorsed guitarists in South Africa.
In February 2005 and again in July 2006, Selwyn Miller, New Orleans based manager of David Gates and Bread, Randy Crawford, and Petula Clark amongst others, brought Dan to New Orleans to showcase this amazing talent.
In his time living in the city of the Blues, Patlansky performed at legendary venues such as Maple Leaf, Rock & Bowl and Checkpoint Charlie with many Blues giants such as Henry Gray (Howlin' Wolf's Pianist), Snooks Eaglin, The Batiste Family and Rockin Dopsie Jr. While abroad, Dan performed live on both television and radio.
Dan followed his first two albums with three more releases Real (2007), Move My Soul (2009) and 20 Stones (2012). His latest album Wooden Thoughts was released in May 2013.
He continues to perform all over South Africa and internationally in the company of world-renowned musicians.
