Event information

Come and have fun and join in with this concert led by two of the finest folk music performers and song leaders in the South West. Songs to warm you up on a January day, Sarah and Paul will bring songs from projects they have been involved with - from the hugely popular Nice Warm Socks to the more recent Songbox – featuring many new songs for early years work. As with all events in the series, there will be audience participation including singing and a chance to make an instant band! Wren will provide some instruments, but please bring along your own instruments for this if you like. Anything from a shhooshhing shakers, tinkling tambourines or strummed stringy things all welcome. The voices will be accompanied by a variety of instruments including guitar, piano accordion and fiddle. This one-off performance will feature songs from the traditional Westcountry archive made by Sabine Baring-Gould as well as newly written pieces - we'll probably even make up a new song or two actually at the event!

ABOUT OUR ARTISTS

PAUL WILSON
Singer, composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul Wilson first came to prominence in the 1970s as a performing musician with the English vocal trio Staverton Bridge.

Alongside his performing work, Paul has an illustrious career as a folk music educator over the last 30 years. His dedication to preserving, maintaining and creating traditional music was recognised in 2002 with the award of an Honorary MA in Music Education by the University of Plymouth.

He and Marilyn Tucker established the educational charity Wren Music in 1983, which they run to this day. It has become a highly respected organisation with a ceaseless programme of folk development activities in schools and communities throughout Devon and beyond, involving over 30,000 participants of all ages each year.

SARAH OWEN
Sarah Owen is a composer, singer and workshop leader with experience in a wide range of music making, including traditional music, combining voice with electronics, making music for dance and theatre, and more. With her duo Solarference she works with folk song and live vocal sampling using their self-designed technology. Recently she has devised and performed new collaborative works inspired by Welsh folklore with Human Beast.

She is fascinated by the variety of vocal traditions and the possibilities offered by the sounds of different languages. This has been reflected in her performance work with artists from around the world. Sarah is a Community Musician with Wren Music, specialising in vocal work.

This event is part of the Adventures in Music series, which is supported by PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Plus…UK.
