Three terrific new generation big bands in one night - Jonathan Silk Big Band features trumpeter Percy Pursglove, Noise Union takes on the music of Monk and Mingus, and Kieran McLeod's Human Resource System - "possibly the top band of rising talent on the London scene" (London Jazz) uses cutting edge technology to turn his trombone improvisations into live scores with a global reach. Support from Simon Roth's Stories and late show by The Dixie Strollers. This night is being presented as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.
Band Biographies:
JONATHAN SILK is a Scottish drummer, composer and bandleader now living in Birmingham, he won the Tony Levin drum prize in 2011, and was also awarded a scholarship from Yamaha for Outstanding Musicians in the same year. The Jonathan Silk Big Band debut album 'Uncouth' (2013) features virtuosic trumpeter Percy Pursglove alongside many of the up-and-coming musicians of the British jazz scene. The album consists entirely of original music composed specifically for the project, heavily inspired by the works of Bob Brookmeyer and Maria Schneider.
NOISE UNION - An exciting new collaborative band big band led by Sam Jesson that unites some of the most prominent bandleaders, composers and performers from both the Birmingham and London jazz scenes. This, their debut project sees Noise Union playing their own arrangements of tunes from the great composers Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.
Kieran McLeod's HUMAN RESOURCE SYSTEM has been described by LondonJazzNews as "possibly THE top band of rising talent on the London scene." HRS is the most flexible large ensemble you are likely to see. Basing itself within the aural traditions of World, Folk and Improvised music, Human Resource System plays high energy music stemming from British Jazz, New Orleans Blues, Scottish Folk, Latin American Dance and South African Township. This band has the unique ability to perform spontaneously composed big band music using a cutting edge piece of software designed by Kieran that displays his improvisations as live notation for the musicians.
STORIES is an outlet for Simon Roth's own music, and unites five of London's most exciting improvising musicians, whose combined force creates an emotionally charged music full of nifty melodies, fruity harmony and propulsive grooves.
The DIXIE STROLLERS are a young seven piece jazz band in the Dixie/New Orleans style of the 1920s-50s, made up of students from two of the top music conservatories in London. Influenced by Alex Welch, Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong, and boasting a front line of trumpet, clarinet and trombone as well as a four-piece rhythm section, the Dixie Strollers are guaranteed to get you on your feet!
