Jim Garrard + Beaver Fuel
Presented by: Place Above0 | OXFORD: The Wheatsheaf |
---|---|
P | Sunday 22nd December, 2013 |
N | 8:00pm |
Place Above formed in 2003 having met each other at school, and set Oxford’s local scene alight with their energetic, chaotic and tongue in cheek live performances of songs about girls who ignore you, and standing too close to the PA at gigs, their sound influenced by the emo post-punk starlets of their day: Hundred Reasons, Hell is For Heroes, Feeder, At The Drive In, etc. They worked their way up from playing their first ever gig in a barn in Marcham, to headlining The Oxford Zodiac at the tender age of 17.
7 years after parting ways to go off to university, Place Above reformed last Christmas and played to a sell-out crowd at a very sweaty Port Mahon. On 22nd December 2013, Place Above are back for one very last lap of honour to celebrate 10 years since their inception as a band at The Wheatsheaf.
“Last year we were genuinely moved by the amount of old friends and new faces who came to relive the glory days with us. Now one of us has a kid, one of us works for Jamie Oliver, and the other 2 have serious jobs, but we miss being in a band a great deal. We would love it so much if as many people as possible came down on 22nd December to celebrate Christmas with us, and join us for a proper sweaty, loud band night at The Wheatsheaf just like in the good old days. We have no plans to do this again, so please come down for what will be our very last gig. There will be new material, old classics and some surprises along the way. We promise an old-school rock night you’ll never forget”
Support comes from Bristol-based Oxfordian Jim Garrard (formerly of Oxford Ska-Punkfunk outfit Retro Fire) – he plays acoustic jams with a ska-tinged Americana edge (think Sublime meets Lambchop). Also on the bill are cheeky pop-punk trio Beaver Fuel with their own brand of toilet-humour laden pop-punk savagery.
