Duchess

Duchess are a London-based band peddling melodic, modernist folk, with members hailing from from Edinburgh, Manchester and Perth (Australia). The line-up revolves around Scottish chanteuse Sophie Dodds, who writes songs about stars, snow and public transport. Duchess’ sound take its lead from the likes of Leonard Cohen and Laura Viers, with Portishead-esque production sensibilities and nods to Bjork, Bat for Lashes, Nancy Sinatra, Scottish folk and Portuguese Fado.
“Duchess’ songs roam between a pure vastness of space, bleak wastes full of crystalline longing, and the warm interiority of a playworld with fantastical premonitions embodied in toylike objects, words and pictures under the window of dreams, that ambivalent hinge. In such a delicate probing of intimacy-liberty, sensuality-decorum, nostalgia-desire, the voice also quests high and low as it carries the lyrics over bittersweet harmonies, expertly tempered and withheld, and an uncluttered structure. Romantic, literate and thrilling.” - Lorna Scott-Fox, Writer and Translator
