Event information

Following their debut in Manchester last September, Grey Lantern is delighted to welcome back tumultuous Mexican shoegazers Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, who will be promoting their third record - and first to be distributed in the UK - Chambers, out on Sonic Cathedral.

The first single from 'Chambers', 'What's Holding You?' (also now rarer than hens' teeth on vinyl), came out in September with everyone from Steve Lamacq to Frank Skinner spinning it on the radio, and NME getting a bit over-excited and describing it as sounding "like Stereolab getting wasted on Walter White's finest blue crystal and pretending to be Queens Of The Stone Age". The duo (who play live as a four-piece using guest musicians) met Spaceman 3's Sonic Boom on a subsequent tour of Europe, the man who mastered Chambers. After laying down basic tracks with Mikale de Graff and Alex Narinskiy, they recorded the album in Chicago with Cooper Crain of legendary psych/kraut/drone rockers Cave - the first time they had recorded anywhere other than at home in Mexico. (The album is called 'Chambers' because, while they recorded it, they felt like they were in various enclosed places far from home and everything else.)

The result is a surprisingly direct record which, despite locking into a pulsating krautrock groove on 'What's Holding You?' or getting lost in a fog of white noise on 'Music For Dozens', always retains a very human heart and soul. There is diversity too - from the slide guitar and driving bass on the out of control rave up that is 'Sealed Scene' to the narco-blues of 'Dead Leaves' and the melancholy folk-gaze of 'Grieving'.

Support comes from Howling Owls Records' Spectres. An abrasive, dark noise-rock four-piece from Bristol, the group's Hunger EP took in influences including A Place To Bury Strangers, The Jesus & Mary Chain, and was surmised by Drowned In Sound as "If guitars are supposed to be dead it's probably because Spectres have killed them. Not for the fainthearted, but essential all the same."

Opening are local acid-punk trio MiSTOA POLTSA, currently one of the most exhilarating live bands on the local Manchester circuit. The trio's new EP, We Knew It Was Alive When It Died, is out on Haus Of Pins Records.
