"Guy Buttery is something of a National treasure” says South Africa’s leading newspaper The Mercury. With sell-out performances in the US, the UK, Australia, France, Italy and all over Southern Africa, Guy is Africa’s biggest acoustic
music export. His debut album in 2002, "When I Grow Up..." was nominated for 'Best Instrumental Album of the Year'
and 'Best Newcomer' at the South African Music Awards. This also made him the youngest nominee in the history of the event. He then went onto to win a South African Music Award (SAMA) in 2010 in the ‘Best Instrumental’ category as well as winning two other major National awards that year including the ‘The Standard Bank Golden Ovation Award’ chosen out of over 4600 performers at the National Arts Festival in SA (the world’s 2 after Edinburgh) and again in 2012 for his performances with longtime collaborator, Nibs van der Spuy. This accolade led to sold out show at numerous festivals and concert halls in South Africa and Europe receiving rave reviews for both the live show and their debut album. In 2012, Buttery was invited to perform with the 52 piece KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, dubbed “Africa’s greatest orchestra” and was also voted “Top Live Show” in 2012 by The Cape Times.
Apart from local achievements, Guy’s worldwide scope and recognition rose exponentially post the release of his award winning album “Fox Hill Lane” with invitations to perform all over the globe. Apart from the obvious accolades surrounding winning awards, Guy was met with nothing but glowing reports from the international press. The most noticeable of these being a 3 page spread in the prestigious Guitar Player Magazine (the World’s biggest guitar related publication) alongside Steve Morse (Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs) and Brian May (Queen).
Following all this, Guy landed a major guitar endorsement with UK’s premier guitar luthier Roger Bucknall of Fylde Guitars. His live version of “The Book of Right On” went on to feature on a Joanna Newsom covers compilation alongside luminaries such as M. Ward, Billy Bragg and Owen Pallet. Guy was also invited to perform at the 2012 South
African Music Awards (Africa's answer to the Grammys) where he was broadcast to an audience of over 4 million strong in one of the country's most watched televised events. The media cited him “as one of South Africa’s finest exponents of the acoustic guitar.”
“… extraordinary…” – Rolling Stone Magazine
“Guy Buttery’s goal is to stretch the boundaries of fingerstyle guitar to their outermost limits. The most diverse and intriguing fingerstyle artist in recent memory.” – Guitar Player Magazine
“… his music has a subtle grace and power all of its own. Though his technical prowess is also bewildering, Buttery immerses himself entirely into the soul of his guitar, coaxing sonic shapes and forms of such startling originality from it that his instrument acts as a kind of lightning conductor for the sound of another realm.” – The Mail & Guardian
