This is a fundraising event held by the Calderdale Dying Matters Partnership; a group made up of organisations such as Overgate Hospice, Macmillan and Calderdale Help in Bereavement with a view to encouraging discussion and dispelling the myths around death and dying.
National Dying Matters Awareness Week takes place from 18th - 24th May and in joining us at the beautiful Hebden Bridge Picture House for this wonderful film about love, imagination and the will to live you are supporting us as we raise awareness in the Calderdale community and beyond. Thank you.
Based on the best-selling memoir of the same name, the film tells the story of Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), editor of Elle Paris, who, after a stroke at the age of 45, was left paralysed and unable to speak or move a muscle. Trapped in what he saw as a 'diving bell', a prison from which he was unable to escape, Bauby's only lifeline became the temporary release, or 'butterfly', of his memories and imagination. With his physical movements so restricted, Bauby's only way of communicating with the outside world lay in the blinking of his eye, a tool he developed to such an extent that he was able to develop a code to represent letters of the alphabet, enabling him to, in turn, complete his memoirs.
Doors open at 7pm and we will have informative stalls and the chance for discussion before being seated at 8pm to receive our Guest Speaker with the screening starting at 8:15pm.
Free with your ticket is entry to our raffle, which will contain several prizes including a free will making session with Armitage Sykes Solicitors!
We hope to see you there!
