Wreckless Eric is Eric Goulden. He was given the name to hide behind. After a while he realised he was stuck with it. Onstage he hides behind nothing, he tells the truth with big open chords, squalls of feedback, lilting enchantment, bizarre stories and backchat. Nothing Eric has to say sounds like it was said by someone else first. Some people can't take it. Thirty seven years of touring have left him in good shape. He's coming to town.
"Wreckless Eric is a hero to all those of us who love a good kitchen sink drama set to music. He takes the strangeness in the everyday and sets it to song. Like Ray Davies, Kevin Ayers and Ian Dury, he is a truly great British songwriter" - Phil Alexander, editor in chief, MOJO magazine
"A sound that Joe Meek would have killed for" - Q Magazine
"Le Beat Group Electique...a blast of sonic honesty, soul-bearing poetry married to Alan Freed-approved rock 'n' roll" - Asbury Park Press
...flashes of pre-stardom Beatles, Jonathan Richman, Syd Barrett, Bobby Fuller, and the stripped-down side of Robyn Hitchcock. But mostly it's like Wreckless Eric - The Vinyl District
Joining Wreckless Eric for this London exclusive date is Anglo-Australian singer songwriter Howard Eynon.
Howard Eynon was born in the small market town of St Ives, Cambridgeshire and then moved to Chichester. When he was eleven, his family moved to rural Tasmania. Settling on a dairy farm in the small town of Deloraine, Howard grew up milking cows, driving tractors, riding horses and blowing up tree stumps with gelignite and would often spend days on end in the bush without seeing another living soul.
Howard Eynon has only released one album so far in his career. This is the cult acid-folk classic So What If I'm Standing In Apricot Jam (1974). Originally released on Basket/Candle Records, the album was out of print since that original pressing, and became one of the rarest and most sought after albums in the genre. However, in 2014, Earth Recordings reissued the album for the first time in 40 years, confirming the album's cult status among the acid-folk community.
