Martin Stephenson brings his unique and inimitable pot pourri of music, comedy and astute observation to Green Note for a special intimate show.
Martin was born in Durham in 1962 and formed his own band The Daintees in the early 80s. Signed to the independent Kitchenware label and later London Records along with Capitol Records Stateside, Martin Stephenson & the Daintees toured with the likes of Roy Buchanan, John Martyn, Aztec Camera and Melissa Etheridge and made four stunning albums between 1985 and 1992 including the seminal "Boat to Bolivia". The band still exists and only this year released their first album in 16 years called "Western Eagle".
Over the years, Martin has developed what one can only explain as a truly unique stage craft. He tours relentlessly, playing solo anywhere from forest clearances to converted pump houses. In the last three years alone he has notched up over 250 live shows. He is one of the hardest working, most kind-hearted and modest musicians in the UK and he deserves wider recognition.
Musically his music styles can be best described as chameleon-like. Some like to pigeon-hole music and refer to Martin's genre as "acoustic folk rock". As a true testament to his sense of humour Martin proverbially sticks two fingers up to being put in a box and on his MySpace site describes his music as Chinese pop / German pop / Korean Pop!!! In reality it is two parts jazz, two parts blues, two parts reggae, two parts soul and 40 parts Martin Stephenson. He is a musicologist and prefers to include as many musical styles in an album as possible.
As well as being a fantastic songwriter, lyricist and consummate communicator with the audience, he is a handy guitar player too, and for those coming to see him for for the first time tonight, you are in for a real treat - and will wonder why you waited so long.
