In a special live event, to launch the publication of ‘X-Ray Audio: The Strange Story of Soviet Music on the Bone’, Stephen Coates and Paul Heartfield will be joined by ALEKS KOLKOWSKI and LYDIA KAVINA, thereminist extraordinaire, to provide a live demonstration of recording onto X-Ray plates using vintage analogue record-cutting lathes and a commentary on groove-based recording techniques on plastic.
“A labour of love researched over many years – is an archive of samizdat creativity, cultural resistance, daring entrepreneurialism. It uses forensic snapshots of physical bodies in order to shed light on a spellbindingly obscure subgenre of discography, and as a portal into a little-known but imaginatively intoxicating chapter in post-war Communist history.”
