Awards: No. 1 in the Official UK Indie Breakers chart No. 7 in the Uk indie Charts No. 51 in over all charts - Nominated for Best Groupin BBC's Alternative BRIT Awards 2013 - Winners of Best Group 2012 Fatea Awards - Winners of Best Group 2013 Spiral Earth AwardsMoulettes are one of UK's most unique touring bands and are steadily being singled out from the wave of Bjork & Kate Bush influenced Alt.Folk artists that have arisen this decade. With Strings, Guitars, Drums, Bassoon and Synths, Moulettes' music weaves between Indie Folk, Chamber Pop and Prog Rock to create an incomparable universe. Renowned for their breathtaking live shows it is clear that few bands have the creative range and work ethic of Moulettes. They areconstantly evolving witha brave approach to production and arrangement that seeks peculiar ways of blending acoustic and electric instruments; For example, putting Bassoons and strings through effects and distortion. Leading from the Cello, female songwriter and virtuosic player Hannah Miller creates an otherworldly framework in which characters move between the realms of Nature, Magic and Science. The band contains all singing, multitasking, multi-instrumentalists; All of whom have shared the stage and studio with well known artists in Folk, Prog, pop and Rock, including Mick Jagger, Nick Cave, Seasick Steve, Bonobo, Gentle Giant, Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Bellowhead, The Levellers and many more.
Moulettes third studio album 'Constellations'(Navigator Records) was co-produced byband member Ollie Austin and Joe Gibb (Leftfield, Catatonia)recorded in studios, church buildings, tunnels, artisan workshops and bedrooms around Brighton and South Wales. It is their most complete and ambitious album to date and conceptually tiesa varied and expansive musical territory over its ten tracks. As Hannah notes:"People listen to Moulettes and apparently hear Shostakovich, Pentangle, Pink Floyd, Bjork, Portishead and even Skrillex. That is where we've all come fromeveryone shares in over 80 years of an eclectic recorded music history".Constellations contains the headrush pop folk of 'Glorious Year', thepsych-indie-folk drama of the title track and the Noir Alt.Folk Step of 'Lady Vengeance' in an opening salvo that is unlikely to be matched in scope by many, if any, albums released in 2014/2015. Full of stories and space imagery, 'Constellations' can accommodate the Nostalgicwaltz of 'The Night Is Young', the progressive folk of 'The Observatory' and the Dark Trip Hop closer 'Keep It As A Memory' whilst remaining a cohesive piece that sparkles with inventiveness and creativity throughout. The ensemble of guests on'Constellations' testifies to the bands diverse appeal consisting of legends Arthur Brown (God of Hellfire) and Herbie Flowers (Lou Reed, Bowie), as well as contemporaries Blaine Harrison (Mystery Jets), The Unthanks, Emma Richardson (Band Of Skulls) and a host of Brighton'sregular players from Germany, Sweden, Greece, Holland, South Africa, Australia, Scotland, Bosnia.
Original members Hannah Miller, Ruth Skipper, Ted Dwane (Mumford and Sons), Rob Skipper (Previously of The Holloways) and Ollie Austin met at school in Glastonbury and Winchester. Their initial period was spent promoting their residency nights 'The Den Of Iniquity' in the renowned 12 bar club on Tin Pan Alley, London. They took these nights to Manchester, Southampton and Brighton with the aim of bringing many Indie bands and Folk influenced bands together. After seven years of being a live band it was only in 2009 that their eponymous debut was released whichMojohailed as"complex and beautifulintriguing and unique".This was followed in 2011 by 'The Bear's Revenge', whichThe Guardiandescribed as "Sophisticated & Unpredictable".Theycontinue to beA popular festival band playing events as varied as Cropredy/End of the Road/Glastonbury (Avalonstage) /Bestival/ and Cambridge Folk. Hannah, Ruth, Ollie and Jim (son of Gentle Giant Drummer Malcolm Mortimore) continue their busy gig schedule around the world with many of their many album guests joining them on their way.
