Event information

Algerian virtuoso trio, El Andaluz, are leading exponents of classical Arabic, North African and Andalusian music.

The master oud player Yazid Fentazi, who composes and arranges most of the music, has performed with Cheb Mami, Cheb Sahraoui and the Turqui Brothers. Yazid Fantazi is accompanied by the world class Arabic percussion (derbouka) of Karim Dellali and the exciting melodic violin of Frank Biddulph. Karim Dellali has played with Joi, Trevor Watts Moiré Music and Oojami, while Frank Biddulph’s unique improvising style on the violin has led to tours with the Balkan group Mukka, and to recording with the Waterboys and Stereo MCs. The band will be joined by special guest, the Algerian singer Reda Boudebagh- this highly competent, very charismatic, and well established singer/ musician also plays oud and percussion.

The group weave a hypnotic spell, often beginning with a poetic and reflective Andalusian nuba, then travelling on to the trance-like Sufi music of the Sahara.

They invariably build to a climax by the end the evening, getting the audience on their feet and dancing to the celebratory Chabi music of Algeria, or to a classical Egyptian belly dance.

This concert, in the intimate surroundings of Green Note, promises to offer a magical journey into the entrancing music and culture of Arabic North Africa.
