All the world is, indeed, a stage. How to bring a story to life.
In this fun and interactive workshop Barry will introduce young filmmakers and animators to the world of Shakespeare in an entertaining and accessible way. He’ll talk about how Shakespeare works, and how the storytelling devices he used are still being followed in film and theatre today.
Barry will look at Shakespeare’s love of the artificial and compare it to the artifice used in animation, showing many examples of his own work, notably the Shakespearean tour-de-force, NEXT. You will be inspired at how most film and theatre, and art in general, is liberated by the joy of artifice, and how the literal has little place in storytelling. You will come out inspired and equipped to make your stories more bold, innovative and entertaining.
Barry Purves is one of the UK’s most celebrated animators. He has produced animation workshops in universities and colleges around the world and for all the major US studios including Dreamworks, DDI, Pixar & Will Vintons. Barry’s animated short films have won over sixty major international awards and he has received Academy Award & BAFTA nominations. Feature film credits include his role as head animator for Tim Burton’s ‘Mars Attacks’ and he was animation director for Peter Jackson’s ‘King Kong’.
Cinemagic’s Little Bard films are part of BFI Presents: Shakespeare on Film, a UK-wide series of screenings and events celebrating the enormous impact the playwright’s life, work and legacy has had on cinema.
