Haydn - Te Deum, Hob.XXIIIc:2
Mozart - Kyrie K341
Mozart - Ave Verum K614
Gounod - Petite Symphonie
Haydn - Harmoniemesse, Hob.XXII:14

In 1802 at the peak of his powers, and acknowledged as the greatest living composer, Haydn composes his final Mass setting in honour of his employer’s wife, the Princess Marie of Esterhazy; an exquisite blend of voices and orchestra that gives prominence to the wind players of the orchestra—the Harmonie as they were known in Classical Vienna—who give this Mass its distinctive nickname. His lively Te Deum was composed a few years earlier for another aristocratic patron, the Empress Marie Theresa. In two shorter sacred works from Mozart’s final years, we hear a passionate Kyrie and the sublime Ave Verum Corpus. Written almost a century later, Gounod’s Petite Symphonie for wind instruments pays homage to the spirit of the Viennese Harmonie.
