For our third film screening we're back at cosy Cafe #9 to chase away the January blues with coffee, cake and special screening of 'Gender Troubles: The Butches' by Lisa Plourde.
The feature documentary asks, where are all the butches? What portrayals of gay women are acceptable and who is erased? Tender, funny and thought provoking, Gender Troubles: The Butches explores these questions in a series of interviews and testimonials with butch - identifying women looking at the strange contrast of being hypervisible in everyday life but invisible when it comes to media representation. Director Lisa Plourde's film celebrates the stories of these women, and shows us there's a lot more to butch identity than plaid shirts and tool belts.
We'll also be sharing 'The Test Shot' a photo documentary project about transmasculine style, recently shown at 'Transforming Cinema', and screening 'Switching Teams', by local filmmaker and Roller Derby player, Taylor Le Fin. Their film, produced by EDEN film, is a documentation of their journey in finding the gender identity that felt right to them, and the way their community supported this journey.
This event is open to all women, non - binary and transmasculine folk. A great way to bring some queer cheer into the New Year in cosy Café #9, with coffee and cake in plentiful supply.
Gender Troubles: The Butches will be screened with subtitles.
