Event information

The acclaimed Australian trio Trichotomy create music that brings together the delicate balance between captivating melodies, intense rhythmic interplay and emotive collective improvisation. The sense of group empathy is striking, with a subconsciou understanding of the flow between the piano (Sean Foran), bass (Samuel Vincent) and drums (John Parker) developed through years of performances and shared musical experience.

They are now are poised to release their 5th album, KNOWN-UNKNOWN, their first with the Dutch label Challenge Records, showcasing the remarkable music of this group.

The groups last release, “Fact Finding Mission” (2013) pushed the trio into new worlds of sound, inspired by a range of influences from classical music, European folk traditions, rock and jazz.

Since that time they have been busy as pianist Sean Foran explains, “we certainly didn’t plan for it to be such a long time between albums…but we seemed to have a bunch of really interesting projects that kept us quite occupied and so we thought…..well, the right time to get in the studio will present itself”.

Busy indeed…. Over the last few years the group has toured to Japan, and collaborated with high level classical groups the Southern Cross Soloists, Collusion and Lunarie Collective and most recently, with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. They also brought British Saxophonist Julian Arguelles to Australia for a tour to major jazz festivals, including a commissioned work for the Brisbane International Jazz Festival.

“The electronics are giving some really interesting depth to the music and allowing us to improvise in new ways”, John Parker explains. “Sam (bassist) is also bringing music to the group, so we’ve got three compositional voices that we can draw on…. It’s a fresh direction for us, but feels like a strong development on what we’ve been cultivating together”.

KNOWN-UNKNOWN returns the focus on the trio, with the music rich and deep in dynamic and textural interaction.
