‘MY GENERATION’ features a wonderful line up of mini double bills and women musicians who grew up listening to music on vinyl and transistor radio… and decided that they also wanted to PLAY!
Inspired by artists such as Joni Mitchell and Suzi Quatro, and with many self taught, they became the first wave of British women jazz musicians in the 1970s and 1980s.
Opening night of the season explores bossa nova and latin jazz, featuring:
Michele Drees Guitar & vocals
Michele Drees is an established drummer for 30 years with a secret passion for all things Brasilian and tap dance. She has led the Bossa Nova group, Sonhos do Brasil for over 20 years.
She will be downing her sticks for most of the gig to play her Takamine guitar and sing some of the rarer Bossa's in Portuguese.
plus Emily Remembered – Kathy Dyson & Deirdre Cartwright’s beautiful guitar project remembering the great US guitarist Emily Remler. They perform swinging jazz standards, bossa nova, and original compositions.
With Alison Rayner double bass and Michele Drees drums
"Cartwright and Dyson exchange murmuring lines on Softly after a theme of gleaming harmonics, and push each other more insistently in the later stages of a live All the Things You Are. Cartwright's lilting bossa Hello World and the earthy, clanging blues catch the ear, but it's the free-flowing, improvised 8 on 12 and a brooding and then reharmonised Afro Blue that avoid the more routine aspects of traditional standard-song jazz jamming."
