THE VORTEX
Continuing an eclectic run of releases from some of the North West’s finest musical misfits, Fat Northerner are proud to present the debut single by local legends in waiting, Mike Price, Maz Bedjet, Nick Repton, Sean O Donnell and Jaxx, a.k.a The Vortex.

Featuring a guest appearance from Oasis co-founder and original bass-player Paul “Bonehead’ Arthurs on the track ‘Revolution Sometime’, this release is a time capsule of Manchester music, with one ear firmly fixed on the cities musical heritage, and the other listening intently for the sounds that will define it’s future.

With clear nods to Oasis, the Who, the Stone Roses, the Beatles and T-Rex, The Vortex wear their classic brit-rock influences proudly on their sleeve; however, it is the band’s recognition of their hometown’s history as the dance capital of the world that really sets them apart from the generic, landfill-indie of their winkle picker-wearing contemporaries.

It has to be a loose fit’, or so said a certain Shaun William Ryder back in the heady days of 1991, a time when these North Manchester upstarts were probably more interested in teenage mutant ninja turtles than mutant mancunian mavericks. However, the Vortex were clearly taking heed of the Happy Mondays early 90’s mission statement when they penned the swaggering, filthy groove of lead track Dirty Soul.

Skinny jeans are most definitely out as The Vortex annouce their loose-fitting mancunian manifesto with the same tangible, unshakeable conviction that once led their idols the Stone Roses and Oasis to take on the world, and win hands-down.

Aimed squarely at the dancefloor, Dirty Soul’s combination of loose, funky guitar riffs, shimmering electronic bleeps and memphis style horns makes for an ecstatic, joyous shuffle so uplifting it makes Kasabian sound like Ian Curtis’ miserable cousins.

The band further emphasise their dance and soul influences with the soaring, life-affirming backing vocals of Jaxx. The heir apparent to the throne of manc legend Denise Johnson, her interplay with frontman Mike Price, recalls the gospel tinged peaks of ‘Let it Bleed’ era Stones, as well as Primal Scream’s classic ‘Screamadelica’.

Having already earned the patronage of John Robb and pricked up the finely tuned ears of Peter Hook, Clint Boon and just about every other local ligger of note, the Vortex are a maelstrom of euphoric mancunian noise, just about to blast the dross from the ears of the UK music industry.
