Event information

Conceived specifically for a new company of dancers and musicians, this performance investigates and celebrates the intelligence of the body. Through the practice of embodied awareness, the performers awaken a sense of belonging, togetherness and joy. An original score by award-winning composer Alex Roth, drawing on the deep sonorities and physicality of two double basses (played live by renowned improvisers Olie Brice and James Opstad), provides an integral counterpoint to Kasia Witek’s highly physical choreography.

Artistic director: Katarzyna Witek

Music direction: Alex Roth

Choreography: Katarzyna Witek in collaboration with the dancers

Dancers: Elisa Vassena, Stella Papi and Tora Hed

Musicians: Olie Brice (double bass) and James Opstad (double bass)

Special guest for the evening will be Alice Zawadzki performing her new project

“Songs to the moon”

Alice Zawadzki – voice, violin

Alex Roth – guitar

Alice Purton – voice, cello

Sitting somewhere between the pith and pathos of folkloric music, classical lyricism and spacious jazz, the latest project from celebrated vocalist-violinist Alice Zawadzki presents luminous settings of songs inspired by the moon, spanning several continents, languages, and eras, but deeply connected by humankind’s universal and age-old fascination and affection. Brought to life by Alice’s voice of “velvet suppleness and gutsy emotional power” (The Arts Desk), the multi-hued, kaleidoscopic sounds of guitarist Alex Roth, and the profound sonority of Alice Purton’s cello, their radiant original songs and unique settings of lunar-themed material are at once as solacing as they are mercurial, and represent chamber jazz at it’s most effervescent and romantic.
