0LONDON: Old Queens Head
PWednesday 7th March, 2018

Event information

On the eve of International Women’s Day, Islington and Hackney Amnesty Group is celebrating with an all-female line-up for its popular annual comedy night.

Women are riding high at the moment – whether it’s fighting for equal pay, standing up to sexual harassment or telling some bl**dy good jokes.

And we are delighted that we have a stellar line-up of comedians for this celebration.

SHAZIA MIRZA - One of "1000 Most Influential People in London" London Evening Standard

Shazia’s new show; ‘With Love From St. Tropez‘ is currently on tour following its launch at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August; “dry as they come, sharp socio-political sass on Brexit, burkinkis & butt plugs”.

Her last stand up tour, the critically acclaimed; ‘The Kardashians Made Me Do It‘, played for 103 nights internationally across the UK, US, Sweden, Ireland and France and completed four sell out runs at London’s Soho Theatre.

“Shazia Mirza is provoking laughter and large intakes of breath once again … brave and urgent” THE TELEGRAPH

ATHENA KUGBLENU - 2017 nominee for the 99 Club Female Comedians' Bursary

Athena writes for BBC Radio 4 (News Quiz), appears on BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio Wales and the BBC World Service, guests on BBC Five Live and in 2017 performed at the Johannesburg international Comedy Festival.

"…authentic, observational comedy presented beautifully…pleasingly original" ★★★★ (Broadway

“Outrageously funny” (Metro)

JEN BRISTER - Stand-up comedian, writer, dickhead

Jen is a regular performer on the UK and international comedy circuits. She has written for BBC Scotland, presented for BBC 6 Music and Juice FM, and has been a regular contributor to magazines and online sites including Diva, g3, Standard Issue and The Huffington Post.

"Hilariously evocative character sketches that display a flair for cartoonish exaggeration and a mastery of both physical comedy and timing" (Chortle)

HARRIET BRAINE - musical comedian, who dedicates a remarkably large portion of her oeuvre to Art History.
After winning Best Newcomer at the 2016 Musical Comedy Awards, she started gigging around London and the South East and has played at venues as diverse as Up The Creek, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Brighton Komedia, and that building that looks like a cheese grater. She reached the final of Gilded Balloon’s So You Think You’re Funny? competition, and was crowned the winner of the Funny Women Stage Award 2016.
Harriet was listed as One of Culture Trip’s 11 up-and-coming comedians to see in London Spring 2017 “Her range of impressions have hit home all over London” (Culture Trip).
• Winner of Individual Comedy Award at Buxton Festival Fringe 2017
Finalist Amused Moose Comedy Award 2017

Gemma Layton (Aka MERCEDES BENSON)- semi finalist, Funny Woman
Born and bred in the Black Country, Gemma studied Acting at Bretton Hall in Yorkshire before returning to her roots to train at Birmingham School of Acting.
As well as acting, she writes and performs comedy. Her stand-up character Mercedes Benson is a semi-finalist in Funny Women and Laughing Horse and she has many other characters that she performs live and on screen.

“Great characterisation and some killer lines” (Psychologies Magazine)

JULIET MEYERS

Managing to mix silliness with edginess, Juliet has a chatty style that allows her to interact with the crowd; this makes her much in demand both as a comedian and an MC.

She has been bringing her own brand of hilarious, cerebral, observational, gag –driven, (mostly gender non-specific), comedy to the stage for 7 years.

“Excellent material. Excellent with the audience” (Tim Arthur, Time Out)

“Devilish coy look, excellent material with some on the edge gags.” (The Scotsman - 4 star review)
