The plot of Battle of the Sexes is loosely based on the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of an argument about whether a woman could ever beat a man at tennis, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With her husband urging her to fight for equal pay, King was also struggling to come to terms with her sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past. The film stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell as King and Riggs and both earned Golden Globe nominations for their work Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian gave the film four stars and described it as ‘ a seductively enjoyable, smart and well-acted film based on the most deadly serious sporting contest of modern times’ All profits from the screening go to Amnesty International. Film starts at 19.00.
