SONNYMOON FOR 3

As Bob Dorough sang, Three Is The Magic Number. The three-legged structure has stability, a three-way conversation always finds somewhere new to go, three location points give orientation and direction in space and time.

SONNYMOON FOR THREE is a trio of diverse players who’ve come together, united by a love of the tradition, to explore the freedom that opens up within the three-way format.

UK-based Irishman RILEY STONE LONERGAN graduated from Leeds University jazz programme with first-class BA honours and has picked up a shelf-full of awards along the way, including the Dave Cooper Memorial Prize for Jazz Saxophone, the John Scheerer Prize for Woodwind and the David Hoult Prize for Outstanding Performance. In 2011, Riley was chosen as one of the 6 Yamaha Jazz Scholars. Recently, he was nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2015 London Music Awards . Now based in London and a regular at the Ronnie Scott’s late session, he’s one of the most exciting young players around and never fails to whip up a storm.

SPIKE WELLS has been a longstanding mainstay of the UK jazz scene. Based in London in the 1960s, with a spell taking lessons from the great Philly Joe Jones, he was recruited for Tubby Hayes’ band by the legendary saxophonist himself; as well as playing with Hayes, in both his quartet and his big band, and the equally seminal UK players Joe Harriott and Tony Coe, he worked with many visiting soloists in the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club throughout this golden era of jazz, including Stan Getz (with whom he toured Scandinavia) Roland Kirk, Art Farmer, Johnny Griffin and James Moody. He formed an association with Bobby Wellins that lasted for over 30 years and encompassed some of Wellins' greatest recordings. He remains active on the scene today, his creativity, fire and passion as unmistakeable as ever.

EDDIE MYER is a self-taught bassist and composer and an active player on the South Coast jazz scene. He’s performed and recorded in a wide variety of different contexts from dance hits to gold-selling rock albums and written songs for internationally successful artists but is equally at home playing jazz in an intimate setting. He’s performed with his own band at Love Supreme, the South Coast Jazz Festival and the Brighton Alternative Jazz Festival and co-runs a regular weekly jam session at the Bee’s Mouth bar in Brighton.
