We are delighted to announce that Alexander Hawkins will be playing a solo piano concert in the beautiful Bateman Auditorium at Cambridge's historic Gonville and Caius College.
Alexander is widely recognised as one of the UK's most innovative and imaginative pianists and composers. He is self-taught, with a great love and deep knowledge of the jazz tradition which - along with classical references - he brings to his compositions and improvisations.
In February 2019, Alexander releases his second solo album, 'Iron into Wind', on the prestigious Swiss Intakt label.
Along with his solo performances, Alexander works in a vast array of creative contexts. He leads and composes for his Quartet and Ensemble, and plays with South African drum legend Louis Moholo-Moholo in a duo and as one of the 'Blokes'. He also has long-standing partnerships with Evan Parker, John Surman, and Sofia Jernberg; and performs alongside contemporary leaders Joe McPhee, Anthony Braxton, Marshall Allen and Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke.
'Hawkins improvises with the strength and conviction that comes from combining an advanced technique with a teeming imagination.' (The Guardian)
