After over 3 years LAWM proudly presents its 50th and final night.
We are over the moon that it is to be headlined by DIANE CLUCK -
one of our favourite musicians and singers of the last 5 years.
We have certainly left our strongest line up until last. We think
this is the best gig happening anywhere in the UK on this night..
DIANE CLUCK (USA) is an incomparable songwriter and singer. She is associated with New York's anti-folk scene, having colloaborated with anti-folk luminaries such as Jeffrey Lewis and Herman Dune. She has toured the UK a few times (though never Lancaster) and gave a jaw-dropping stand out performance at the 2007 Green Man Festival. MOJO magazine were spot on in 2005 when reviewing her classic 'Oh Vanille Ova Nil' album as #2 in their "Top Ten Underground Albums Of 2005', stating, "Diane demonstrates how little she needs to put the world on hold: just a voice, a guitar and some of the most spellbinding of words you'll hear anywhere." Truly stunning.
ALASDAIR ROBERTS is arguably Scotland's and Britain's most talented and interesting solo male UK folk performer. Roberts is noted for both his own compositions and recitations of traditional songs, including on his album of traditional death ballads, No Earthly Man. In 2006 he featured in the BBC documentary Folk Britannia. He is also a long standing collaborator with American alt.folk icons Will Oldham and Jason Molina. Signed to prestigious US label Drag City, his last album 'The Amber Gatherers' was described by The Times as "a musical highlight of the year". After headlining a sold out LAWM night back in 2007 it is a privilege to have Roberts return, tonight, also playing songs from his brand new May 09 release 'Spoils'.
MARY HAMPTON is no stranger to LAWM. Currently in the process of
achieving 'national treasure' status, 2008 was a breakthrough year
for Hampton. Her album 'My Mother's Children' was lauded by everyone from Eliza Carthy, to UNCUT, to being awarded MOJO folk album of the month back in August. Her shrill voice and stripped back tenor guitar produce a sound that is both beautiful and sometimes perfectly unsettling. A major part of her appeal is her ability to sound as if she comes from a different era, singing with an otherwordly reflective authority. As UNCUT magazine wrote "coffee-table-shattering purity...these are songs of unnerving delicacy, elemental and acoustic simplicity...potent and enchanting". She appears tonight as part of a joint UK tour with Diane Cluck.
DAN HAYWOOD'S NEW HAWKS have developed over the past three years into Lancashire's best twisted folk ensemble. Their songs are creative, weird and surprisingly poignant. Although a brummie by birth Haywood takes inspiration from his travels around the UK - especially Scotland - into his songwriting. The New Hawks will provide the perfect kick off to the evening.
