It isn’t often that a February 29th comes around so I thought that I’d celebrate with a rather special event.
I’ve loved The Monochrome Set for such a long time since hearing their peerless single, ‘The Jet Set Junta’ many years ago on a compilation album. After living with their records for years I finally saw them live at Doune The Rabbit Hole a few years ago and they not only didn’t disappoint, they blew me away completely. Now they are set to release their fifteenth studio album, Fabula Mendax, and, in conjunction with Stereogram Recordings, play at The Cool Cat Club.
The Monochrome Set originally formed in 1978 out of the ashes of a band, The B-Sides, that featured the future Adam Ant, Stuart Godard. They released their debut single, ‘He’s Frank (Slight Return)’ on Rough Trade in 1979. ‘He’s Frank’ would be later covered by Fatboy Slim and Iggy Pop as The Brighton Port Authority, and featured in the Television series, Heroes The Monochrome Set would release two further singles for Rough Trade before signing a major deal and releasing their debut album, Strange Boutique, in 1980.
The Monochrome Set were probably most closely associated with the Cherry Red label who released the majority of their records between 1982 and 2006.
After a lengthy hiatus, The Monochrome Set began playing and recording again in 2010 and have gone on to play across the world and continue to release brilliant music, refusing to become a nostalgia act. They have released four new albums since reforming and in 2018 Cherry Red issued a box set, 1979-1985 The Complete Recordings.
The Monochrome Set are accessible yet off-the-wall making distinctive, idiosyncratic but utterly beguiling music. Right from their early days as one of the Post-Punk bands they have been cited as an influence by artists and bands such as Edwyn Collins, The Divine Comedy, Franz Ferdinand and Blur’s Graham Coxon.
Fabula Mendax, their fifteenth studio album, is released on 27th September 2019 and has been described as being ‘at once accessible and arcane, upbeat and dark, lush and spare, and with lyrics that as ever remain tantalisingly opaque.’
