Event information

Nye Banfield is an ambitious jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader based in South East London and studied at Trinity Laban.

His biggest influences are Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Kendrick Lamar and Ambrose Akinmusire and he combines aspects of each of their music in his own writing and improvising to create a distinctive and contemporary sound.

Nye recorded, produced, mixed and self released his debut EP entitled ‘All Change’ in October 2018, and it combines traditional jazz teachings with more current grooves and harmonies to create an exciting sound which is “gripping and intense”.
The record consists of 5 of Nye's original compositions featuring Dylan Jones of Ezra Collective on trumpet, Ewan Moore on drums, Michael Shrimpling on double bass and Tom Morley on piano.

As well as releasing music under his own name, Nye has also recorded with up and coming singer Tara Lily, featuring on a song alongside trumpeter Dylan Jones, drummer Femi Koleoso and produced by Jammer of BBK. He has also worked with hiphop group 'nine8 collective’ appearing on the Bone Chilled Milk EP.

During his time at Trinity Laban, Nye studied under many well respected musicians
including Mark Lockheart, Jean Toussaint, Simon Purcell and Tom Challenger.
Nye has picked up a wealth of performance experience since living in London.
Appearing on multiple occasions at The Jazz Cafe, Ronnie Scott's, the Piano Bar in Soho, and Kansas Smitty’s; as well as holding regular residencies at Mercato Metropolitano and The Verge in Shoreditch.

As well as being a proficient saxophonist Nye also plays the viola to a high standard and claims some of his most important musical inspirations came from playing with symphony orchestras, with which he toured to Italy twice, The Czech Republic and Slovakia, performing works such as Rachmaninov's 2nd Symphony, Mahler 1 and Vaughan
Williams' London Symphony.
