Event information

In 1805, at the age of nineteen, Frances Crawford Kemble left her theatrical family and career to marry Robert Arkwright (a grandson of Sir Richard) and moved to Derbyshire. Here she became recognised as an accomplished singer and composer of songs and ballads which circulated widely amongst talented amateur musicians in the social circles in which she moved, most notably those of her life-long friend, the 6th Duke of Devonshire. From the late 1820s, several of her songs were published but eventually fell out of favour with changing musical tastes in the later 19th century. Now largely forgotten as a composer, the life of Frances Arkwright adds a quite different dimension to the Arkwright story and to life in Derbyshire in the first half of the 19th century.

Rosemary Annable returned to her native Derbyshire in 2012 after working for over 30 years in Sydney, Australia as a consultant historian in the field of heritage conservation and as a university college and parish archivist. She is the Volunteer Archivist for The Arkwright Society and her interest in Frances Arkwright began on finding a manuscript album of her songs in the Arkwright Society archives.

This online talk will be run by the Arkwright Society.
