The Country Soul Sessions are delighted to invite you to an evening of Pop, Folk, Rock ’N’ Roll & Country Soul ♩♫ ♪ ♬ ♪
McCookerybook and Rotifer
We are extremely proud that McCookerybook and Rotifer will be playing for us at the Country Soul Sessions. Original 'She Punk' and John Peel favourite Helen McCookerybook and Viennese pop luminary Mr Robert Rotifer have united to present to the world their ‘Cosmopolitan cross-Channel Pop’ a musical cocktail that incorporates dashes of pop, country, folk and retro soul. Formed just six months before lockdown Helen & Robert would meet up for writing and recording sessions whenever they could. Born from those sessions their fine six track EP ‘Equal Parts’ was released in 2020 to great reviews. This was followed a year later by yet another six track digital offering ‘Equal Parts II’. This performance at the Country Soul is a rare outing for the duo and they will be augmented by Ian Button (drums) and Ruth Tidmarsh (bass). McCookerybook and Rotifer duet in both English and German and that lovely transition from the male to female vocal brings to mind the classic 1960s musical partnerships of Gainsbourg & Birkin and Sinatra & Hazelwood. Expect to hear topical lyrics, songs covering life and love with a piquant seasoning of political commentary.

Drew Morrison and the Darkwood
The Darkwood are Nick Steyn (drums), Ian Gant (guitar), George London (bass & singing) and songwriter Drew Morrison (guitar and singing) and are affectionately known as the Country Soul Sessions ‘House band’. The band's central vision of a music touched by influences ranging from Alt Country, Pop & Rock N' Roll all tinged with 'golden chording' has remained focussed and realised itself into a unique sound. Playing some of their new tunes expect to hear flashes of late 1960s Velvets, Jimmy Webb-esque wordplay and electrical guitar playing that has one foot in the 1950s and the other very much in the now.

Paul Handyside
We are delighted that folk and roots troubadour Paul Handyside will be joining us at the July Country Soul. Mr Handyside is a singer songwriter whose writing style has been compared to artists as varied as Chris Difford, Robyn Hitchcock, Elvis Costello and Martin Carthy. Beginning his musical career as part of the 1980’s Kitchenware scene with the fabulous jangly pop group Hurrah! Mr Handyside’s musical journey has been through a pop landscape tinged with a country influence which is very much evident on his new long player ‘Loveless Town’ (Malady Music 2021) where he explores his own brand of folk-tinged americana. For this Country Soul performance Paul will be accompanied by Mr Rob Tickell on weissenborn slide & Telecaster guitar.
