Two groups who explore the space between jazz, classical and folk in the beautiful setting of St Matthias Church, Stoke Newington's only Grade I listed building.

ARQ
Led by bassist and composer Alison Rayner, multi award-winning quintet ARQ are widely celebrated after several years of extensive UK and European touring - and critically acclaimed for their three album releases August (2014) A Magic Life (2016) and Short Stories (2019).

Their music combines richly nuanced compositions, rhythmic interplay and folk-infused melodies. With their love of improvisation, they create a strong sense of narrative and cinematic quality. ARQ play ‘songs without words’ and are lauded for their vibrant, communicative performances.
They will also be performing brand new music from their forthcoming album.

BALLADESTE
A collaboration between Preetha Narayanan (Violin) and Tara Franks (cello), string duo, Balladeste, explore the versatility and sound potential of just two string instruments. With traces of contemporary minimalism, Indian classical and folk, the duo co-creates all original compositions that are vibrant and experimental yet melodic and filmic in quality – songs without words with a contemporary alt-folk twist.

“Defies easy definition… very very special indeed” Katie Derham BBC Radio 3 In Tune

“Cinematographers looking for music that can radiate suspense but at the same time is warm and intimate…look no further” Songlines 4****
