Northern International Theatre present..
Roger Elkin’s The Hunger – A theatrical exploration of Elkin’s epic cycle of poems concerning the great Irish famine
What we did on our holidays: an English excursion to the Irish Republic leads to an encounter with the National Famine Museum, and a terrifying plunge into the lives of the nameless poor who experienced the Great Hunger of 1845-50.
Elkin’s remarkable undertaking has been to wrest back national conscience and self-doubt from the pall of forgetfulness surrounding England’s first colony.
Northern International’s new adaptation splices the poetry to conjure an extraordinary drama of ecological devastation, rich storytelling and empathic remembrance apt for our own time of culture wars and climate denial.
Post-Show Discussion
After the show there will be an opportunity to dig deeper into the production with Roger Elkin and the creative team, led by writer Pam Brough.
“… a stunning energy… the drive to survive compels a brutal humanity…” Envoi
“Roger Elkin’s poems burst with sharply observed and well-chosen detail, and are simply very interesting”. Don Paterson
