The King Blues, Arrows Of Love, Gaggle, The Homosexuals, Pocket Lips and many more acts have been confirmed to perform at the first of a brand new series of live music nights at the Brixton Fridge on Friday November 13th.
The King Blues, described by Kerrang! as ‘The most exciting live band in Britain’, are one of Radio One’s Zane Lowe’s (and the UK punk underground’s!) best loved bands. Featuring two acoustic guitars, a ukulele and a Melodeon, The King Blues’ music is a heady and life-affirming concoction of soul-tinged ska, street poetry, working class/protest folk, dub bass lines and doo-wop melodies, all delivered with a punk attitude. Theirs is the gritty flipside to the slick ska-pop of today; a dub-heavy summer sound with a raised fist. Myspace.com/thekingblues
The Arrows Of Love’s heady alternative rock sound draws comparisons with elements of world changing early 90’s bands whilst retaining a distinctly English voice and it’s own style. Their recent self-released and self-produced debut ‘Burn This Town’ EP found huge favour with the likes of Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens, Rob Da Bank, and John Kennedy. Myspace.com/arrowsoflove
Gaggle, a riotous 22 piece East London alt girl choir, are ‘the most exciting, innovative and genuinely imaginative force at large in music right now. More infectious than a mnemonic plague (ahem) and going off with the full force of Blondie's 'Atomic', they sound like 10,000 MIAs - and we bet they don't kiss nice." (NME) Myspace.com/gagglespace
The Homosexuals, one of the original explosive garage punk bands from the late 70’s, who ‘deserved to reach a wider audience alongside icons like the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and all the rest’ (Pitchfork) return to the live stage for the first time in decades. Lead singer Bruno Wizard’s new incarnation of the Homosexuals is not to be missed. Myspace.com/thehomosexuals
More Light More Power, a statement of defiance, streaming guitar, marching rhythm, lightening strike to open hearts and the sublime magic of knowing the threat behind the silence, a violent ritual in warm synthesizer with cold resolution, absolute submission by one girl and three boys alone in the dark. Pocket Lips are 7 members strong with three vocalists, drums, bass, keys and are fresh back from playing with DJ Yoda the awesome Mr Margaret Scratcher on the turntables. The band have been working and touring with other artists such as Roots Manuva, The Dub Pistols, and Babyshambles, while Mr Hudson has asked them to remix his next single. Myspace.com/pocketlips
Honey Weasel are a dynamic duo consisting of Hagop Matossian ‘Honey’ and Aaron Horn ‘Weasel’. Their sound is a fusion of samples taken from their favourite tunes/seminal movies, jammed with their own beats to create a delectable ever changing mush. Myspace.com/honeyweasel
Sam Ritchie's Trumpet driven Q DOS perform original high energy balkan style ska and dub material with a current line up of 4 top brass players, drums, dj decks, guest vocals and dancers. Myspace.com/qdosmusic
Room 2, The Art Of ‘In The Year 2525’ (Exhibition)
As part of the release of Arrows of Love’s forthcoming single, a reworking of classic song ‘In The Year 2525’, the band are working with 20 artists, each creating a unique piece inspired by the song, to be included with the only 20 physical copies of the single to be released. The artists range from photographers to sculptors to tattoo artists, from as far afield as Paris and New York.
The Supernovas – intelligent new punk outfit inspired by a similar stream of consciousness as the late great Joe Strummer. Myspace.com/supernovan19
The Savants – catchy power punk pop. Myspace.com/wearethesavants
The Eraserheads – dirty, grungy, guitars, irreverent and messy. Myspace.com/theerasarheads
