"Tourbillion" is a synonym for vortex and a part of a timepiece mechanism that compensates for the effects of gravity. It's also a remarkable ensemble making its debut at The Vortex.
The lineup includes:
Jaron Zepel Lanier - the American computer scientist, composer, visual artist, and author who coined the term "Virtual Reality" in the early '80s.
Jair-Rôhm Parker Wells - American free jazz bassist, composer and conceptualist.
Reeves Gabrels - guitarist, known for virtuosity, versatility, and originality. His compositions and improvisations defy genre and "explore sonic extremes with a great, adaptive intuition for what each song needs most". He was also David Bowie's guitarist of choice for well over a decade.
Klaus Kugel - drums. Klaus Kugel studied at the School of Jazz in Munich. Since 1989 he has been playing intensively with the outstanding lithuanian soprano-saxophonist Petras Vysniauskas in many different international projects. He's one of the most inventive and adventurous drummers in Germany and has performed and/or recorded with artists such as: Petras Vysniauskas, Karl Berger, Tomasz Stanko, Charlie Mariano, Kent Carter, Michel Pilz, Theo Jörgensmann, Kenny Wheeler and many others.
In support are Braindead Collective - a fluid and flexible improvising ensemble, whose pool of musicians is drawn from players with backgrounds in all sorts of genres. From harsh electronic noise rock to neo-classical ambience and off kilter freak jazz, BDC touch a lot of bases, while somehow maintaining textural continuity. Line up is:
Seb Reynolds (synth)
Jean de Talhouët (guitar)
Max Hallett (drums)
Chris Alcock (trombone + effects)
