Oh. My. Forest of Sound are as excited as they can possibly be about this one – Tim Hecker is on our ‘greatest of all time list’, and we’ve finally managed to bag him for Leeds. Why is he so, so good? Just listen to his music – almost unbelievably beautiful ever shifting swathes of sound and emotion, sounds that sound like they’ve been waiting to be discovered rather than made… the all encompassing gorgeousness of his music sounds like nothing else. I know everyone says this all the time, but seriously this IS NOT ONE TO BE MISSED. We’ve been wanting to get this guy in Leeds for a long time, and it’s unlikely to happen again for a very long time. And to make it even sweeter, we've got the brilliant Machinefabriek and Simon Scott to support. Woo!
TIM HECKER [http://sunblind.net/]
Tim Hecker is a Canadian-based musician and sound artist, born in Vancouver. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works for Kranky, Alien8, Mille Plateaux, Room40, Force Inc, Staalplaat, and Fat Cat. His works have been described as “structured ambient”, “tectonic colour plates” and “cathedral electronic music”. More to the point, he has focused on exploring the intersection of noise, dissonance and melody, fostering an approach to song craft which is both physical and emotive.
His Harmony in Ultraviolet album received critical acclaim, including being recognized by Pitchfork as a top recording of 2006. Radio Amor was also recognized as a key recording of 2003 by Wire magazine. Tim has presented his work in a live setting around the world, including performances at Sonar (Barcelona), Mutek (Montreal), Primavera Sound (Barcelona), Victoriaville (Quebec), Vancouver New Music Festival (Vancouver), and Transmediale (Berlin). He currently resides in Montreal.
“ Hecker's synths are massive, sounding like something huge that's been torn in half with great force, exposing a bouquet of prickly and splayed binding material. That this racket which Hecker specializes in can engender such a pleasant sense of surrender is the key to his appeal.” – PITCHFORK (8.7)
" ...foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole." – NEW YORK TIMES
MACHINEFABRIEK [http://www.machinefabriek.nu]
Machinefabriek (Rutger Zuyderveldt from Rotterdam, Holland) is amongst the finest experimental/electronic artists of recent years – his ultra-prolific back catalogue showcases his ability to perfect classical ambience, organic drone soundscapes, electronic minimalism and cathartic noise, and he has been hailed as one of the most interesting new experimental musicians by the Wire magazine. His show for Forest of Sound last May was amazing, so expect this to be pure class.
”Lawine’ showcases the singular talent of Rutger Zuydervelt, his ability to morph from near-absolute sonic stilness to noise jams with slow, barely descernible stealth” - THE WIRE
”QUITE POSSIBLY ONE OF THE FINEST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR… Rutger Zuydervelt has married the smart post rock sensibility of Mogwai with something far more experimental and the crunchy turntablism of Jeck with something far more accessible. The resulting sound is a deeply immersive collection of experiments, populist sounds with a noisy bent, or post rock without the rock.” - BOOMKAT
SIMON SCOTT [http://www.myspace.com/o3o3o]
Simon is the former Slowdive drummer who puts out international experimental music with integrity on his label KESH Recordings. Through Simon’s dimly-lit soundscapes, we encounter shimmering melodies that gather and disperse through apocalyptic rhythms, surrounded by layers of harmony that hover over found-sounds. Simon has also collaborated under the moniker Seavault (Morr Music) with A.Ryan from Isan, and also goes under the name Televise.
His debut album Navigare was released on Erik Skodvin’s (aka Deaf Center / Svarte Greiner) Miasmah label, to great acclaim, and is due to be followed by the Nivalis EP in early 2010.
"Scott is particularly adept at layering coolly shimmering guitars and dark churning currents of noise into something vast" THE WIRE
"...as we approach the end of the ‘Navigare‘ tale the listener is left in a state of exultation knowing they have just listened to what has to be one of the best Miasmah releases to date." 10/10 - FLUID RADIO
