Holy Family

Holy Family is the duo of ROOM40 label operatives Lawrence English and John Chantler coming together for some bass heavy twin modular synth attack - ELEH lineage tonal stasis, chaotic bomb clusters and bristling distortion.

This one is for the gold, all the way and all the time. holy family is the modular synth duo of Lawrence English and John Chantler (room40 extraordinaries). and you know what's coming. it opens onto a putrid, rotting corpse hanging from the bedchamber. Chantler & English aren't fucking around. Their synths sound like they're dying, every note stretched to the point of breaking oscillating into the ground. this is not child's play. Before you know it your blood stops flowing, turned into a molasses. Faint echoes try to scratch their way to the surface, totally buried alive. every so often you think you hear a melody whirring from behind, but everything gets swallowed back down into this deep, dark pit. intense. Incredible. - Digitalis

Lawrence English

Australia | Touch, 12k, ROOM40, Sirr, Cronica

Lawrence English is a media artist, writer and musician living in Brisbane, Australia. Much of his work prompts questions of field, perception and memory, and is often concerned with sound environments and field recording. Over the past decade he has visited every continent in search of unique and compelling sound spaces. He has been struck by lightening, swam in the Antarctic and dodged numerous venomous animals all in the pursuit of sound.

"What makes Kiri No Oto work so spectacularly well (and it is a spectacular album) is that no matter what situation I've listened to it in and no matter what sort of sound system I use, it still sounds phenomenal." Brainwashed (on 'Kiri no oto')

John Chantler

John Chantler is an omnivorous recording artist/musician based in London, UK. Starting out as a drummer, John still keeps loose time for Outshine Family and The Balky Mule whilst exploring his own solo synthesizer works and occasionally convening the Organ Octet - a massed organ ensemble of eight reed/chord organs. He also plays synth in a trio with Tujiko Noriko and Lawrence English and as Holy Family - a duo with Lawrence English.

He left his native Australia in 2001 for rural Japan where he released his debut disc Monoke and had a chance encounter with Tori Kudo, leader of Maher Shalal Hash Baz, who opened a welcoming door and invited John to play with them for a show where he met The Tenniscoats whom he went on to collaborate and tour with.

In 2005, John had sent down some drums long distance to Lawrence English who was putting together "Blurred in my Mirror" with Tujiko Noriko. For the follow-up: (2008): they instead convened in Brisbane with John laying down guitar, bass, drums, synths and other instruments. It was during that session that the modular synth bug bit and John returned to the UK and began the dark decent into black hole of synth obsession, putting together the instrument that forms the basis of his new LP, "The Luminous Ground".

"Restrained, dynamic and melodic while also at times totally blissed-out... Instrumental, experimental music rarely gets better than this - 9/10" Foxy Digitalis (on For Barry Ray - 'New Days')

"...Chantler has transformed one head-and-heart experience into another. An utterly absorbing and resonant work." First past the post (on 'Monoke')
