MIE is hugely excited to announce a very rare UK appearance of The Thing, a legendary and explosive trio - Mats Gustafsson (alto, tenor, baritone and slide saxophone / live electronics), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass and live electronics) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums). This will be the first show ever outside London in England.
Influenced by different traditions of free music derived from Germany, England and America, these may n...ot be immediately obvious to some listeners due to their truly unique sound.
Mats Gustafsson is one of Europe's biggest names on the free music scene. Through groups like Gush, AALY trio and Peter Brötzmann`s Chicago Tentet, he has established himself as an intensely powerful saxophonist, and has somewhat reinvented the way of playing the instrument. You might remember him bursting a few veins during the recent the Ex and Brass Unbound tour and he has also collaborated with Sonic Youth and Thurston Moore.
Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love have become known as Norway`s heaviest rhythm-section. Since they`re long time collaboration started in 1992, they have been working in several groups, amongst them School Days with Ken Vandermark, Scorch trio with Raoul Björkenheim, and the Swedish/Norwegian jazz-group Atomic.
