The play about the fictional Roman general Titus Andronicus is thought to be Shakespeare’s first tragedy, and is his most violent work. It is a story about revenge and cruelty set during the latter days of the Roman Empire, which shocked and fascinated audiences since its first performance in 1594 where it premiered at The Rose Playhouse.
This highly physical take on Shakespeare’s tragedy will be directed by New York City-based director Jung Han Kim, whose unique style will shape his interpretation of Shakespeare’s bloodiest play. Kim’s work is characterized by intense movement sequences, ritualistic theatrical moments and a strong imagery. He trained with renowned Living Theatre Company and is the artistic director of Luvas Theatre Company in Manhattan.
The Rose Playhouse, Bankside’s first theatre, 1587.
The Rose is an indoor archaeological site, it is advisable to dress with an extra layer as there is no heating. There are also no toilets so please use Shakespeare’s Globe just a few hundred meters away.
